Day 58 – St Matthias, Apostle

Revd Tim Heaton’s Thought for the Day

Matthias was a follower of Jesus from the beginning, perhaps one of the Seventy, who after the Ascension was chosen by lot – a way of revealing who God had already chosen – to replace Judas Iscariot and bring the apostolate back to twelve.

Empowered by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, he served as a missionary in Judea until his martyrdom by stoning and beheading.

In his window in Milton on Stour church, where the Twelve are all so beautifully portrayed in stained glass, he can be seen holding a large battle-axe, the instrument of his death and his symbol for all eternity.

Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia.
