Pictures of the tons of rubbish left behind on Bournemouth Beach left me stunned. Have so many people already forgotten David Attenborough’s heart-rending images of marine life caught up in floating plastic?
I was already worried that coronavirus had taken the impetus out of the War on Plastic, which at the start of the year had seemed to be gathering momentum. Wet wipes and single use plastic are considered fair game once more in the name of health and safety, and that may be OK.
But the scenes on the beaches? No, that’s not OK. It makes me feel ashamed to be human. The planet needs healing, and the human race needs saving from its deplorable selfishness. Come, Lord Jesus.
