Day 104 – St Peter and St Paul, Apostles

Revd Tim Heaton’s Thought for the Day

Martyred together on this day in Rome in AD 64. Peter was nailed to a cross as a public spectacle at Nero’s circus, upside down at his own request: he considered himself unworthy to die in the same way as his Lord, and also he wanted to face heavenward as he died.

Paul was less-publicly executed, beheaded with a sword outside the city walls, his last prerogative as a Roman citizen.

I believe there was a man called Jesus of Nazareth who God raised from the dead, not only because I read it in the Gospel but because Peter and Paul were prepared to die for that truth. I do not believe they would have been prepared to die for a lie.
