Lockdown wasn’t enough to heal the earth. Even though CO2 emissions fell considerably for a couple of months, it was just a blip on a planetary scale.
Last month was the hottest May globally ever recorded; ice is melting in Greenland at a rate never seen before; a team of polar scientists who had planned to leave by air had to leave by boat – there was no ice for their aeroplane to land on. Is there any hope?
Yes. Coronavirus has prompted a shift in our values and attitudes: many have prioritized collective safety over individual freedom; distant threats are considered worth preparing for. Over an extended period of reflection we’ve had a chance to reimagine our future.
