Christening

Christening is also known as baptism. Everyone is welcome to be baptised into the worldwide Christian family. There are around 10,000 babies, children and adults baptised in the Church of England every month and each newly baptised person joins a family of two billion baptised Christians around the world.

You can be baptised at any age. At whatever age baptism is a landmark moment on the lifelong journey of faith. When children are baptised parents and godparents thank God for the gift of new life and promise to help and support the child to grow in faith. The church also promises to welcome and support the newly baptised and to pray for them.

Baptisms usually take place during our main morning services. We try to make sure we find a date that suits you and your family. There is no charge for a baptism service.

If you would like to consider baptism for yourself or for your child, come to one of our services and speak to one of the clergy team or phone the church office. We will then meet with you to help you to prepare for this special celebration.

There’s lots more great information on the Church of England’s Christenings website.

Young people and adults who are thinking about baptism will usually want to think about being confirmed too. For further information click here.
